  17. <p>    When the Gazeta Wyborcza (Electoral Gazette) hit the
  18. newsstands in Warsaw last week, the paper not only had the day's
  19. hottest story, it was the story. The first Solidarity daily ever
  20. to be published legally in Poland, the Gazeta ran a large
  21. portrait of Solidarity leader Lech Walesa and an account of his
  22. meeting with Jozef Cardinal Glemp. The edition also carried six
  23. pages profiling the union's candidates in next month's
  24. parliamentary elections.

  26. <p>    Because of a technical glitch, only 150,000 copies of the
  27. first few issues rolled off the presses, but the projected
  28. circulation is 500,000. Under the agreement reached during the
  29. round-table talks between union and government leaders last
  30. month, the paper, rechristened Gazeta Codzienna (Daily Gazette),
  31. will continue to be published after the election. While the
  32. editors have announced their intention to "present views and
  33. opinions of the whole independent society," the Gazeta will no
  34. doubt always have a favorite subject. The paper's motto: "There
  35. is no freedom without Solidarity."
